Dual-Mode Hoodie — Hood-to-Scarf Conversion

Project Type: Personal Development
Role: Design Concept, 3D Modeling, CMF
Tools: Gravity Sketch (form & function studies)
Year: 2025
Materials (concept): 340–380 gsm cotton-poly fleece · Nylon drawcord (Ø4–5 mm, orange) · Low-profile hook (Alluminum, orange) · Alloy grommet (ear-level pass-through)

Overview

Most hoods do nothing when they’re down. This concept turns the hood into a functional neck scarf/gaiter in seconds. A routed internal drawcord exists at ear level and locks into a small hook on the opposite side, tightening the wrap, sealing drafts, and giving the hood a second life when not worn on the head.

Approach

  1. Problem framing → sketch: Identified the “idle hood” issue; drafted a wrap path that preserves the hood silhouette yet enables a clean scarf closure.

  2. VR modeling in Gravity Sketch: Blocked hood volume, collar height, and cord routing channel; added ear-level grommet and opposite-side hook geometry.

  3. Function loops: Tested cord reach, hand-feel, and visibility; ensured the hood edge nests smoothly when wrapped.

  4. Render pass: Produced photoreal stills showing two modes (hood up & scarf mode) and details (grommet, hook, orange cord).

Materials & Construction

  • Hood & body: Mid-weight fleece (340–380 gsm) with stable edge for clean wrapping; double-needle topstitch on hood seam.

  • Cord system: Braided orange drawcord with molded tips; internal channel along hood rim; ear-level grommet for pass-through.

  • Closure: Low-profile orange hook on the opposite side; cord slots securely into the hook—no Velcro needed.

  • Finishes: Optional soft tricot facing on the inner hood edge for comfort in scarf mode.

Outcome

  • A simple, manufacturable dual-mode mechanism that keeps the familiar hoodie look while adding real cold-weather utility.

  • Deliverables include hero renders, detail callouts (grommet, hook, routing), and a short demo clip showing the wrap/lock action.
