Gravity Sketch Cloak - Concept (3 Patterns)

Project Type: Personal Development
Role: Design Concept, 3D Modeling
Tools: Gravity Sketch
Year: 2025
Materials: Shell — 80% Virgin Wool / 20% Polyamide · Lining — 100% Cotton

Overview

A three-direction concept study reinterpreting the Japanese Haori through a Western lens—sculptural volume with bold surface graphics. Each cloak explores a distinct narrative: mountain topography, coral forms, and all-over graphic rhythm.

Approach

  1. Haori references → modern, structured silhouette (stand collar, dropped sleeve, long hem).

  2. VR block-outs in Gravity Sketch for proportion, collar height, sleeve drop.

  3. Surface strategy: appliqué vs. repeat/jacquard; seam economy and panel readability.

  4. CMF: deep navy grounds with high-contrast accents for movement and clarity.

Outcome

  • Three production-aware concept models with clear graphic methods (appliqué for A/B, jacquard/print for C).

  • Renders and callouts ready for portfolio and stakeholder review.

  • Next steps: swatch trials (bonded appliqué vs. jacquard handfeel), edge-finish studies, and lining/color refinement.

Materials & Construction

  • Shell: 80% virgin wool / 20% polyamide (boiled or double-face, ~420–520 gsm) for warmth, drape, and durability; polyamide adds abrasion resistance.

  • Lining: 100% cotton (twill/poplin 130–160 gsm) for breathability and comfort; contrast color at collar stand optional.

  • Interfacing: Weft-insertion fusible at collar/fronts for structure.

  • Graphics:

    • A/B appliqués cut from tonal shell shades; heat-bond + 2–3 mm top-stitch.

    • C as woven jacquard or all-over print on the same wool-blend base.

  • Closures & Finish: Hidden placket (snaps or 2-way molded zipper), turned facings, cotton bias binding on interior seams.

  • Care: Dry clean recommended; cool iron under cloth.

Design Directions

A — Topo Blues
Layered “contour-map” appliqués in shifting blues evoke mountain terrain and elevation lines; centralized composition adds 3D depth without clutter.

B — Coral Bloom
Organic coral motifs in saturated orange/red on navy; asymmetric placement across sleeves/hem for movement.

C — Doodle Field
Full repeat pattern inspired by Mr Doodle / Keith Haring—playful glyphs tiled over a calm silhouette.
